First Bike Ride & Trip to the Park

Yesterday, which happened to be my Dad's 60th birthday, was an absolutely GORGEOUS February day! It was so nice that Kaden and I enjoyed getting outdoors after a long winter spent mostly inside. We went for a walk and then played at the park. Kaden had a blast riding on the swings and going down the slide for the first time.

After Ryan got home, we went for a bike ride. This was Kaden's first time to ride on his new bike seat and wear his bike helmet and knee pads. He looked so cute! Then we stopped by the park again to show Daddy how much he likes the swings.

Here's a few pictures of our happy, outdoor-loving little guy:

We have a court date!

Wohoo! We're going to finalize Kaden's adoption on March 8. What is true in our hearts will finally be legal on paper; Kaden will OFFICIALLY be our son!

You are all invited to a finalization party. Here's your invitation:

Happy Valentine's Day!

I hope everyone had a wonderful "day of love"! We went out to eat for lunch, with Kaden, but it was still nice.

I know you have seen this already, but here's a Valentine's Day card from Kaden:

Happy Birthday to Me

My birthday was really on Saturday, but most of my family was out of town, so we are going to celebrate today. It actually works out well, because I was sick and in bed on Saturday. I had the flu. Uck! But, Ryan took care of Kaden all day and pampered me, so that was nice!

Kaden is now 9 months old. Before we know it, we'll be celebrating his Tol. For those of you that don't know, the Tol is a big First birthday celebration in Korea. It's a very special tradition, and we are looking forward to it!

Here's a cute pic of our 9-month old big boy:

This month is going fast already

I can't believe it's already February 7. This month seems to be moving by very quickly. Kaden will be 9 months old on Saturday, which is also my 31st birthday!

We got Kaden a walker and a rider. He's learned how to use both. I need to get video clips of him with his new toys. He was pretty funny to watch with the walker at first. He kept "leaning" like in the picture below!

Photo Sharing - Upload Video - Video Sharing - Share Photos

It took him awhile to figure out how to push himself on the rider, but now that he's got it, he's all over the place. I'll post a picture and/or video sometime.

I'm trying to get caught up on my scrapbooking. Here is my most recent page. Kaden is always acting like a puppy!

Cool New Trick!

I've had a lot of fun learning to digital scrapbook. I've also discovered a lot of other fun things you can do with Photoshop. The following are some optical illusions I've created. The frames were created by Elisabeth Weaver.

Home 5 months tomorrow!

Can you believe it? The past 5 months have gone so quickly. In just 2 weeks, Kaden will be 9 months old. Wow! Kaden had a minor surgical procedure on Friday. He absolutely amazes us. We were expecting him to be in pain and fussy for several days, but he acts like nothing happened! He has always healed quickly from any bruises or scrapes. I wish I had some of his health!

Here's a scrapbook page I created of our day at the hospital:

Kaden's First Snow

We just had our first "real" snow of the season this weekend. I'd been waiting to get some pictures of Kaden out in the snow! He wasn't entirely sure what to think of it, but we got some cute pictures:

Whoa! It's been awhile

Sorry I haven't posted in so long. Kaden is an active 8 month old and the only time I get on the computer is while he is napping. With house chores and other responsibilities that come first, my computer has been missing me lately!

Can you believe Kaden is 8 months old already? Boy time flies. In just a few days, he'll have been home for 5 months. Before we know it, half a year will have gone by. Then Kaden will be walking, and he'll turn 1. Yikes!

Here's video of Kaden's latest set of "tricks". He has perfected the "Give Five" that he has been able to do for awhile and has added waving and clapping to his list of achievements. We're still working on the fine details of clapping, such as using both hands and not just hitting one with the other!

Please be in prayer for Kaden next Friday. He will be having an outpatient procedure done. Nothing big, but he will have to have to "go under" and he won't be feeling well for awhile. Actually, Mommy & Daddy are probably the ones that need the prayers the most!

2006 Scrapbook Pages

Now that the year has drawn to a close, it's time for me to hurry up and crank out some more scrapbook pages! I still have a lot of Kaden's first 4 months home to do, but looking back, I am amazed at how much I have already accomplished. You can view the pages I've completed and see the credits at Dropshots.

I also did several pages in 2006 before Kaden came home. You can also view them at DropShots as well. I put them on January 4.

Any know anything about Blogger?

Anyone here know anything about blogger? Ever since they switched to the new beta version, my sidebar is no longer a sidebar. It's at the very end of the page, which is not very useful. I'm assuming it's because my posts are too wide, but I can't figure out how to change it in the HTML.

Did you know......

that you can download pictures and videos from our Drop Shots site? All you have to do is right click on the picture and say, "Save As". It's the same process for videos as well. Make sure you have your pop-up blocker off.

You can also order pictures and products straight from Drop Shots. I know you're all just dying to have a Kaden T-Shirt, right? Hee...Hee..

Anyway, I didn't know if you knew about these features so I thought I'd spread the word. In other news, Kaden went to the doctor yesterday. He is now up to 20 lbs., 9 oz. He'll be 8 months old on Wednesday. My how time flies! Kaden has a bad cold, but the doctor says we just have to let it run its course. He is too young to medicate. Ryan, however, is not too young, so the doctor gave him medication. It's funny, because he didn't even have an appointment - he was just there with Kaden!

Happy New Year!

Wow! Where did 2006 go? On New Year's Eve, we celebrated two events: The dawning of 2007 & Kaden's 4 months home anniversary! I can't believe that he will be 8 months old next week. Boy time flies!

Our entire household is suffering from colds, so we haven't taken many pictures since Christmas, but I promise we'll start taking more soon.

Kaden Meets Santa

Hi! We just got back from a week long trip to Indiana. It was great to see all of Ryan's family. Kaden had a wonderful time with his Mam Maw & Pap Paw, Aunts, Uncles, & Cousins. While in Indiana, Kaden got to meet Santa Claus. He wasn't sure what to think of him.

Kaden's ABC Book

I got a really great deal from Shutterfly. If I spent $10, they gave me a $30 Storybook for FREE! Well, I needed to print Christmas cards anyway, so I took them up on their offer. I'm so glad I did! The storybook turned out great.

You can view it by clicking on this link:

7 Month Update

Can you believe Kaden is 7 months old already? He is growing and changing every day. Two more teeth have broken through and will be visible soon. Some of the worst drooling and sleepless nights are behind us now!

Kaden's latest "trick" is that he has figured out how to get off of the couch by himself! I've attached a video below. We are still working on teaching him how to wave. He mostly just waves at himself!

Kaden still prefers the "B" syllable. He says "Buh" and "Baa" when he chatters. He does say "Ma Ma" but only when he is hungry or mad. I don't think he has really associated that sound with me yet. We've yet to hear him make a "D" sound, but Ryan keeps working hard with him.

It's terrible being sick

You'll notice there hasn't been much activity on this blog lately, nor has there been many new pictures added to Dropshots. That's because the Oren household is not feeling well. Kaden has a runny nose and slight cough, and I have a sore throat, stuffy nose, and major head & body aches. Ryan mostly just feels achy and tired.

It probably didn't help that we sat out in the cold Sunday night in a live nativity. But, honestly, I think the colds were already starting before then. We'd appreciate your prayers as we have a busy week ahead of us!

Ooops, I've been MIA

Wow, it's been awhile since I posted! I hope everyone had a very happy Thanksgiving. We had a great time with family. Kaden tried mashed potatoes for the first time. He DID NOT like them! He took one bite and then spit up. Oh well, we'll try again some other time!

Sunday night we put up our Christmas tree. We wanted to capture Kaden's expression the first time he saw it, so we set up the video camera, turned out the lights, brought Kaden in, and then turned on the Christmas tree. His response was not what we expected! We had hoped his eyes would get wide, he'd smile in wonder, and then reach out to touch the magical tree. Actually, his reaction was more like, "So what?" You can see it below:

Kaden's DMSA Scan

Yesterday was a long day! As many of you will remember, Kaden had a Urinary Tract Infection while he was in Korea. The hospital there did a DMSA scan and found a large cortiol defect in his left kidney. They recommended that we do a follow-up scan once he was settled here in the United States.

So, yesterday we left town at 5:00 a.m. We got to the hospital at 7:00 and got Kaden settled into his room. At first he had a great time playing with the toys, being weighed and measured, etc. But then he had to get an IV. That was no fun at all. It was even hard on Mommy & Daddy! Once that trauma was over, he settled down and was content to be carried up and down the hallways of the pediatric corridor until he got hungry. The poor little guy had to let the dye they injected circulate his body for 2 hours before being sedated, and he could not have anything to eat or drink.

At 10:30, they took us downstairs and Kaden was sedated. That was hard too. His eyes rolled into the back of his head and it was terrifying for Mommy & Daddy. They did the scan, and by 11:45 we were back in his room. We won't know the results of the scan for a couple of days, but to our naked eyes, it looked like both kidneys were fine! At 12:30, Kaden woke up, took 4 oz. of pedialyte and a 6 oz. bottle of formula, had his IV removed, and we were on our way home by 1:30. He slept all the way home, was up for 3 hours (and took 4 oz. of formula every hour!), and then slept the rest of the day/night until 5:00 this morning!

We hope he will quickly adjust back to his normal schedule and will forget the trauma of the day. Please pray with us that the scan will not show another defect. The pediatric urologist thinks there is nothing to worry about and ordered the DMSA scan to appease Korea's requirements for our adoption.

UPDATE on 11/30: We got the results of Kaden's scan - he's a perfectly healthy little boy!

God is so good!

I just need to take a moment to praise God for His goodness. It's amazing to me how He knows our needs and then orchestrates through to his people to see that our needs are met. We've had some amazing things happen this past week that can only be credited to God's goodness. He saw our need and provided. In some cases, He has even gone above and beyond our needs and provided a few "wants" as well. God is so good!

One Active Little Guy

Kaden is wearing me out! He is now 6 months old and is constantly on the go. He's officially crawling and has now discovered a love for pulling himself up on things and climbing on things (mostly me). I am constantly on the lookout to make sure he's not trying to stand up using something unsteady. I also have to be careful to make sure he's not going to whack his head on anything if he falls after pulling himself up. It's a constant battle! On Friday, I spent a majority of my time playing interference between the fireplace and the telephone stand.

Where has my baby gone? I'm not ready for this much activity yet! Plus, he's taking much shorter naps, so I'm finding it hard to get anything done. I guess that's motherhood!

Sometimes he crawls right out of his britches trying to get to the cats:

Oh, and by the way, Kaden weighed in at 19 lbs., 9 oz. at the doctor's office today and he is 2 ft., 2 1/2 inches tall.

Special Weekend With Special Guests

Ryan's parents came to visit this weekend, and they brought a surprise with them. Actually, they brought five surprises: Tom, Melissa, Cassi, Mabrey, & Brody! This was Kaden's first time to meet his Mam Maw & Pap Pa, Aunt & Uncle, & cousins.

Although the weekend was short, we all had a great time. Kaden also got to have a lot of first time experiences with them. He went in a swimming pool for the first time and got his first haircut. A few pictures are below. You can see a lot, lot more on our DropShots site.

Home 2 months

Can you believe that Kaden has been home for 2 months already? Where has the time gone? He has changed so much since his homecoming.

I made this quick video of pictures encompassing the past 2 months. The song is "Labor of Love" by Steve & Annie Chapman.

Happy Halloween!

Instead of going Trick or Treating tonight (who needs all that candy?), Kaden and I dressed up as pumpkins and went around town visiting everyone at work. First we went to see Grandma at the Telephone Company, then on to the college library to see Auntie Em, home for lunch, up to Phillips Hall to see Grandpa, then out to the farm to see Daddy! Everyone loved seeing the little pumpkin and he had a good time too!

Darn Daylight Savings Time!

Kaden is not wanting to adjust to the new time change. We've done our best to keep him on his regular schedule, but he has resisted our attempts and insists on doing everything an hour early! We started trying to keep him up later at nighs earlier this week, but he still went to bed tonight at 7:00, thinking it was 8:00. I hope it doesn't take him long to adjust, because we don't want to keep getting up at 4:00, which is his 5:00 a.m.!

Here's a video of Kaden from the other night. We were keeping him up late in an attempt to get him used to going to bed later. Obviously, it didn't work. First he was extremely grumpy, and then he got "loopy." He crashed about 10 minutes after this video was taken!

We did a photo shoot in the backyard yesterday. Kaden was in a good mood and we got a lot of great pictures! For some reason, Drop Shots isn't working today, but when it's back online, you can can checkout all the great shots using the Picture link at the right. Prayer Request

Normally I have reserved this blog for updates on Kaden. But, today, I need to post an update on myself. I am in need of prayer for my health.

Back in May, I started experiencing extreme chronic pain in my bladder. I constantly felt like my bladder was full. My bladder burned and throbed all day long and through the night and I began to use the restroom as much as once every half hour. My doctor referred me to a urologist.

Last week I had a cystocsopy that confirmed the urologist's suspicion. I have interstitial cystitis. This is a chronic, incurable disease and is a chronic inflammation of the bladder. As most of you know, I already have one chronic, incurable disease: endometriosis. I am really struggling with the diagnosis of a second, even more painful one.

To top it all off, the medication for this condition is extremely expensive. It is going to take some major budget cuts to be able to afford it on a monthly basis. I know it is necessary; the pain is unbearable and does not allow me to sleep, but I hate being a burden on my family's finances.

I can't help but wonder why. Why has God chosen to let me endure two painful diseases? Why has he chosen to make me a burden on our finances? Why can't he miraculously heal me? I feel that no one truly understands the pain I face on a daily basis and the struggle is for me to simply get out of bed in the mornings.

So, I am asking for your prayers. If you read this entire post, then I know you must care about me. Thank you for that! Right now, I need all the encouragement I can get. For more information on these diseases, click on the links below:

    The Green Bean Machine

Kaden went to the doctor on October 13 for his 5 month check-up. He weighed 18 lbs., 12.5 oz. and was 25 3/4 inches in height. He is at the 50th percentile for height and the 90th percentile for weight!

The doctor said it was okay to go ahead and start him on baby food. Below is a video of his first green bean experience:

    October Milestones Already

Kaden has changed so much in just the month of October. Here are some of his latest developments:

    1) Getting on his hands and knees and "rocking"
    2) Two new teeth
    3) Discovered the fun of playing with his fingers & toys
    4) Sucking his thumb
    5) Making the "B" sound, such as "Ba, Ba"

He has also learned that he can do certain actions to get a laugh. One thing he enjoys doing is holding his pound puppy in his mouth by one ear and shaking it!

    The Holt Picnic

This weekend, we attended the Holt area picnic. It was nice to gather together with other adoptive families and share stories. Kaden got to meet his friend Noah in person for the first time! They had so much fun together, and so did all the parents! Hopefully the picnic will become a family tradition every year.

    Home a Whole Month!

I can't believe it's been a month! Kaden has already grown and changed so much. He'll be 5 months old in just 9 days. Where has the time gone? Here is a recap in pictures of his first month home as well as a picture taken today that replicates a picture my mom took of me 30 years ago.

    If Kaden Wore Glasses

I got new glasses at Eye Master's in the mall, and while we were there Kaden got to try on some glasses as well! We have been busy, busy, busy lately and the month of October is filling up fast. Our baby boy is going to be all grown up before we know it. He'll have been home 4 weeks tomorrow and on October 10, he will be 5 months old. Yikes!

    Funny Fish Face

Whenever Kaden sits on one of our lap's while we are eating, he does everything in his power to get a bite. The funniest thing though, is the face he makes during his attempt. His eyes pop out and he puckers up his lips to make what we call the "fish face." It is so funny!

    Home for 3 weeks

Can you believe that it's been 3 weeks since we picked up Kaden? Where has the time gone? It's amazing how much Kaden has grown and changed in these past few weeks. We are learning more about him each and every day and are beginning to "figure" each other out! We are so blessed to have him in our lives and look forward to the many, many more weeks ahead.

    Kaden's First Harvest

Kaden rode in the combine yesterday! He didn't seem to mind it at all and even slept for an hour and a half. Today, he rode alone with Dad while Mom spent two hours at home playing "catch up" on house work.

    Here's a video clip:

    Kaden is eating cereal!

Well, I don't think the old wives tale is true. Feeding a baby cereal before bed DOES NOT help him sleep through the night! Kaden really likes the cereal and took to eating it like a duck to water. He has the spoon thing figured out and I couldn't shovel it in fast enough for him. But, he still woke up 4 times last night. Go figure.

Here is a video clip of Kaden packing it in! Also, I would like to ask for your prayers for tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. We are having our first post-placement visit.

    We're getting closer!

Last night Kaden went to bed at 10:30 p.m. He woke up at 11:30, 1:30, 3:30, and 6:00 for bottles. Then he slept until 7:15! So, he is pretty much back on his Korean schedule. His foster mom said he would sleep from 11:00 pm. until 7:00 a.m. waking up for two times for a bottle. We're getting closer!

Her report also said he took one morning nap and one afternoon nap. Kaden went down for a nap at 11:30 a.m. and is still asleep (it is now 1:15 p.m.). I will probably wake him up soon if he doesn't wake up on his own. So, I am hoping that he will take a nap from about 4:00 until 6:00 this afternoon and then go to bed around 10:30 again. Now, we just need to get his feeding schedule figured out and we will be doing really, really well!

    Pray for sleep

I am sooooooooo tired. Kaden still has not adjusted to our time zone. Last night was the best so far. He slept from 9:00 until 10:00, woke up and was fussy until about 12:30 a.m. when he had a really big fit. Once he calmed down, he took a bottle and slept from 1:00 until 4:00. He then woke up, had another fit and another bottle and eventually went back to sleep until 8:00 am.!!!! This is the longest night's sleep we've had yet.

It is so hard on us to watch him have his nightly fits. We can't do anything to calm him. He won't take a bottle, turns his head from us, thrashes around, and screams at the top of his lungs. We think that he is grieving for his foster mom back in Korea. Nighttime seems to remind him that she is not here.

Please pray for our little guy. We want him to be happy and feel secure and loved. It's so hard to see him in such emotional agony. It's also really hard on us physically and emotionally. We are so tired. So, we would really appreciate your prayers.

During the day, when he's not sleeping, Kaden is generally very happy and easy going. He loves to look at lights and to listen to music. He sits very quietly and looks intently when I read him books (then tries to eat the book!), and he likes to lay on his tummy and bat his hanging toys back and forth. We enjoy these fun moments and they definitely outway the bad ones.

We've kind of slacked off on the picture taking lately. Chalk it up to sleep deprivation I guess! But, I wanted to share a couple of scrapbook pages I've created with some of our favorite pictures so far:

    Starting to Adjust

Kaden is slowly getting back into his routine. He's still on Korean time, but at least he is sleeping in long stretches now rather than an hour at a time. When he is awake, full, and clean is VERY happy and content! We melt everytime he gives us a big smile or belly laugh!

Here is a video clip for your enjoyment:

    We're Home!

Meeting Kaden at the airport was an amazing experience. The wait for him to arrive at the airport was almost worse than the entire 14 month wait of the adoption process!

It was such a wonderful feeling when I finally held Kaden in my arms. My friend Michelle was able to capture that special moment on film, and I think you can see the joy in my face.

We had a rough trip home and a rough first night home, but Kaden is now sleeping peacefully and we look forward to a fun day. He was all smiles and giggles at the airport, and we're sure they will return once he gets settled in his new surroundings.

We love him so much already. He has us wrapped around his little finger! Be sure to go to http://www.dropshots.com/starwarsfans to see more pictures. We will add more once we get them from Michelle. Hopefully we will have video soon too.

Thanks for sharing in our special day!
